What is an Fire Risk Assessment?
A typical assessment checks the following:
1) Fire doors. Would they contain a fire and provide a safe passage via the exit routes?
2) Methods of notifying the inhabitants, in case of the fire. I.e.. smoke and heat detectors, sounders, call points, exit routes etc.
3) Fire fighting equipment – we check for fire blankets and extinguishers and check to ensure the types of extinguishers are appropriate for the types of fires expected in the space.
4) We check the presence of emergency lighting
In case the the property is not safe, we give recommendations to make it safe. So a fire risk assessment is not pass/fail – Even where the risk is very high, there are steps that the property owner can take to reduce risk.
These assessments are recommended on an annual basis although the requirements will vary depending on the building being assessed.

Typically an assessment takes about 45 minutes, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the site.
